About magic clock and God’s timing

One of my vivid childhood memories I have in mind is standing by the window waiting for my dad to return from work. We lived in the block of flats on the second floor, and I remember at one stage while waiting for him I built a magic clock using some kind of plastic blocks (an equivalent of lego nowadays). This magic clock I thought was supposed to bring him back home quicker. Dad, who used a public transport, would usually walk home from the station, and I could see him through the window walking towards our building and waving hello and smiling at me. My heart jumped in joy, my lips stretched ear to ear. I truly believed that pushing the arm of my magic clock did the trick. I would then shout joyfully to my mum who would be in the kitchen preparing the dinner while helping my older sister who was diligently working on her school homework: “Mum, dad is coming!” And both of us (my sister and I) would wait by the door to greet him. Part of the welcome would be to show him our latest artwork or sing a song I have learnt at school as soon as he reached the second floor. My sister would share her school achievements ad receive words of compliments for her grades. This experience of waiting was difficult and joyful for me as a child. I was only 5 at that time. The concept of time is not an easy one to comprehend. Dad’s presence was important to me, and waiting for him to be home was most expected event each day.

One of my favourite quotes about waiting from the Bible comes from the book of Isaiah (40:31) But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. This quote has always been an anchor for me in big and small events of my life. Sometimes I wish I have the “magic clock” in order for hardship to pass by quicker. Some other times, I wanted to use it for others to help them in challenging life situations when waiting seemed to be extremely unbearable in their circumstances.

However, I am a grown up now, and my magic clock existed only in my childhood. What I learnt so far though, and continue to learn each day is that God cares about us and renews our relationship with Him. He empowers us at the times when we need Him the most. Although His timing may not always align with our expectations, it would always turn out to be the best for us and exceeds what we could ever imagine. Patience is a task to master but the one which helps us to see God’s timing in our life.

Year 2020 has been challenging for most of us and probably you might feel more weary than ever, however God’s promise is that you will walk without fainting, run without feeling tired and fly like an eagle. Hold on to this promise, be a sign of this promise to those who may find it this year is more difficult than you are experiencing. Stay positive, take one day at a time. Nothing will last forever, even every challenging time in life. This too shall pass  (2 Cor 4:7-18). I pray that you and I will welcome each day with appreciation of our loved ones, stronger bonds in friendships and gratitude. Although we know that there is no such thing as a magic clock, I pray that knowing that God is the one who always understands and helps us in life challenges, will bring smile on your face and peace in your heart.

Have a good week,

Sr Grace
