I received my first Bible on the day of my First Holy Communion. For many of you it might seem like a common practice, but back in Poland in 80s it was pretty much a time when obtaining your own copy of the Bible was quite a challenge. Lucky for me I received my own copy from my godfather, who, being a Divine Word Missionary priest, was able to get it from his own resources. This first Bible of mine was really special. I used this Bible on every Youth Meeting and learned my ways of interacting with the word of God by reading, writing, highlighting, circling… just making the Bible mine, making it my journal and prayer book.

This first Bible was my friend for many years. I took it with me when entering religious life and more stories and prayers have been written on side pages of it. Eventually this Bible got used so much that I had to start thinking about the replacement. But it was not as easy as one would think. To buy a Bible is not only to find the money but to befriend, to own the book, its author and the words which are there “just for you”.

Moving to Australia and learning English have opened in my life another adventure with Bible which was simply to read the Scripture in both Polish and English. I enjoyed it very much. I compared my favourite passages in both languages and keep on discovering new insides and meaning. But I still did not have a Bible which will give me a feel of the first one and a desire to read more, hear more. My new English Bible friend came as a present for the 25th Jubilee of entering religious life 3 years ago. English Study Bible with references to the Hebrew and Greek Study Words – just great! The understanding of the context in which the books were written originally ultimately opened for me new doors of understanding and encouraged me to learn more.

There are many online resources connected with the Bible study, bible reading plans and various languages translation which one can access through various websites and/or download as the app into their personal devices:

But the usage of all the above resources do make sense only when we simply want to be closer to God, get to know Him more and be more like Him, who “loves us first” (John 3:16).

In just a few days, we will start the special time in the Church which is Lent. This year I would like to challenge myself and YOU to read the New Testament in 40 days. Here is the simple plan which could guide you day by day. Reading New Testament in 40 days

Have a great week,

Sr Grace
