Coffee with God – “coffeeology” for every day

I am not a morning person. When the alarm clock (or to be more accurate alarms) go on, I do not have a noble thought of “Thank you, Lord for another beautiful day” (which would be great to have). My thought is rather: “I need coffee!!!”. The process of waking up is just simply not easy for me despite of living past almost 30 years in religious life which requires from me waking up rather early. For the past few years my morning coffee mug has my name on it. Received as a present, became a bit of a joking point, because I often say that I even need to have my name written in order to respond to the question of who I am while I am not quite awake yet. During the week my morning coffee is a necessity to keep me going. However, what I truly enjoy, is the weekend morning cuppa when I can sleep a little longer (even one hour is a bonus) and take my time to enjoy the coffee.

Many years ago I read a book which title I (unfortunately) forgot. This book was a fiction trying to impersonate God as a boss of a big company which was heaven and earth. The angels, his immediate staff members would bring for His approval different projects. In one of the stories, they were seeking the endorsement to build a retreat centre. God was about to approve the project when He noticed that the retreat centre has three coffee shops. He immediately asked the angels for the explanation. They looked at Him, smiled and said: well, we were told that in every cup of coffee is Holy Spirit which is supposed to help people on retreat.

Despite of the reason: to get awake or to pray better; despite if it is a cup of coffee or tea or a glass of water, we all need some time to sit, think, relax, enjoy. We need a time of quiet conversations with God over the cuppa. Those moments of informal prayer can be the most significant moments of experiencing His loving presence in our life. And, no doubts, will encourage us to nurture and enhance our relationship with others.

I am putting the kettle on. Who is coming?

Have a great week.

Sr Grace
