Like it or not

I really don’t like numbers! And any work that has to do with numbers.

Ever since I can remember I did not have much interest in numbers. Math and science were my least favorite subjects. I was curious in all other subjects but math. Unfortunately, I also did not have teachers who encourage or inspire me to be able to understand math.  Most of the time I would memorize anything and everything I needed in order to pass those subjects and that was more than enough.

When entering religious life and becoming a religious education teacher, I felt quite relieved that finally I would not have to deal with numbers anymore. I was happy to focus on what I believe I was capable of. But then I learnt quickly that in life I cannot always avoid things I don’t like. Even in religious life, with the vow of poverty, does not make me free from being responsible and accountable financially. Budgeting, reporting, applying for grants, providing reports on the money spent for the students in the school or parish setting would be an unavoidable part of first years in religious life. As my responsibilities were extended, my accounting skills and other were needed even more.

Two years ago my congregation asked me to take a responsibility of looking after finances in the congregation. Even more numbers, regulation, reports, balances! Sometimes finding an error of few digits numbers could take hours of headache. While this kind of work can be fun in a rare occasion, it is difficult, overwhelming at times, mostly tedious, but I have to do it!

I love cooking and creating good food! Cooking is relaxing, a good remedy to unwind, and it can be inspiring. Sharing what I have cooked with others also bring enjoyment. To think how to create delicious and good looking dishes is exciting and fun. I don’t mind spending hours in the kitchen preparing and mixing ingredients, tasting and creating the dishes which look as good as they (hopefully) taste. Things didn’t always turn out the way I expected, but then I would try again next time hoping I would   improve. Someone said that food is God’s love made edible. Being able to live in Australia, I am very grateful to be able to taste so many cuisines. Having a best friend who shares passion for cooking makes it even better and more exciting and meaningful.

In life, sometimes we do things we love to do, but also we just have to do the things we are less interested in.

Having passion in creating something, or pursuing hobby is as important as being efficient in the jobs we undertake. To embrace what is given in the front of us and do the best that we can do is not only a matter of our efforts but also God’s given graces. He gives us opportunities to learn new skills, face new challenges and keeping a good balance in life.

Have a good week.

Sr Grace
